The Power of Assets
Research conducted by the Search Institute with more than 100,000 6th-12th graders has identified 40 concrete, positive experiences and qualities--developmental assets --that have a tremendous impact on young people's lives. Studies show that these assets can protect kids from many unhealthy or harmful choices and can promote positive attitudes and behaviors. All kids benefit from experiencing these assets, regardless of gender, race, and socioeconomic status. The following charts, created from data collected from St. Vrain Valley students, show that the more assets young people experience, the less likely they are to become involved in a wide range of "risky" behaviors and the more likely they are to engage in positive behaviors.
